lino cuts

These are my lino (or the newer equivalent to that material) cuts, prior to printing them. I've done 6 separate buildings in a mixed up order from a more rural style building all the way through to an urban building:

I went into the print workshop with my cuts & here are my tester pieces that I came out with, in no particular order:

The lino cuts all together showing the variation in colour.

I mixed yellow & green ink getting darker with each print, I tried out a patchy look where I didn't mix the two inks fully & left them patchy in places, but I'm not sure if I'll do this for my final prints.

layout workshop

This workshop was to make us think about layout which comes up in every piece of work. We were lucky enough to work wit Kid Acne who talked us through the thought process of positioning on the page & using both positive & negative space. We were given a number or silhouette shapes to chose two from & had to play around with their positioning as well as combining taking out blocks/chunks of the page & adding in type face:

This was my first attempt at this task. I chose the outline of some russian style architecture & a car. I chose these because I thought they had interesting shapes. I also looked at other possibilities of ways to work on the layout (as you can see to the right of the image.)

This was my next attempt at the task. I chose to replace the car silhouette with that of some kind of plant. This brought about my idea of urban & rural which I carried on as my theme of the project. I also added text into this piece & played around with where to take the blocks away from.

This was my final outcome from the workshop. I decided to not shade the shape in so that it was all a flowing colour. I don't like the black square in the corner, thats possibly what I'd change if I re-did it. I like how I've broken the word up into three lines, but I'm still not a big fan of blocking chunks of the page out. If this hadn't been part of the task, I personally wouldn't have bothered with this. I think the piece would flow better without it.

continuation of work....

So here is some of my work up to date & following on from some of my photography:

These are some mono prints I have done of the most country side style building I could think of-a granary mill.

Here is a mono print & a water colour painting of a plant also representing the country side.

I have done several more mono prints of leaves & trees that also represent what can be found/seen in the country side.

This is a quick pen sketch of a combination of both an urban building but with a rural plant type thing growing out of the chimney. This was just an idea combining my two opposites. I might look further into this idea.

As I was sat in a cafe, I did this quick line drawing of the scene around me. This is in a city & represents that there are always people around you, its always busy unlike in rural areas.

The above images are both examples of city scenes, but I did these to practice both my line sketches & also perspective which is one of my weaker ares.

My aim is to spend more time in the print workshop & further my ideas in that medium. I want o do more mono prints if possible as well as possibly doing some lino or etching prints.

city/urban shots

So I've been walking round sheffield & taking a few photos of the urban scene around me. These are the equivalent to the ones I took of the country side.

Everything in the city is concrete, its like a concrete jungle growing upwards around you. There are some perks to being in the city, for example the graffiti work brightens the place up & there are always people around so you never feel alone!

building sketches

After having decided on my route I have done several rough sketches of different styles of houses ranging from more basic farms all the way up to city tower blocks:
a farming mill

little thatched cottage

basic red brick house

slightly larger tudor style house

modern town house

terrace houses all joined together

tower block/sky scraper

I tried mind mapping my thoughts. I sketched down all the things that came to mind when I thought of both the country side & being in the city. This has given me space to think about what direction I want to push my project in.

After exploring as many routs as possible I've come to the conclusion that I want to look at the architectural development from the country side into towns & cities. My initial thoughts are to make prints, either screen or etching to create images showing the transition of countryside (rural) into the bigger & more developed buildings of cities (urban)

So this shows the very basic change in buildings from the country into the city.

Country photos

At home I live in the country side & I have used this environment as inspiration for my "rural to urban" project. I Have taken photographs of things that remind me of the country side, the live stock, trees & the smell of poo!

I've recently been home & taken more shots of the country side:
